Biography

Mitchel Gray is an accomplished photographer, videographer, and author whose career spans the worlds of sports, fitness, fashion, lifestyle, and fine art. With more than 100 magazine covers, over 1,000 editorial and advertising pages, and two best-selling photography books published by St. Martin's Press, his work reflects a longstanding fascination with the human form, the character of his subjects, and the extraordinary visual possibilities of movement.

His photography has appeared in publications including Men's Health, Men's Fitness, Muscle & Fitness, Runner's World, Bicycling, Vogue, Mademoiselle, Esquire, and The Sporting News. Throughout his career, he has photographed an exceptionally diverse range of subjects, from celebrated athletes and entertainers to dancers, performers, and individuals whose stories are revealed through the camera.

At the heart of Mitchel's work is an appreciation for the human body — its strength, grace, individuality, and capacity for expression. Whether photographing an athlete at the height of competition, a dancer suspended in motion, or a personality in a moment of stillness, his images explore the relationship between physical presence and personal identity. His distinctive approach to lighting, composition, and timing emphasizes not merely how a subject looks, but what makes that subject compelling.

This philosophy finds perhaps its most distinctive expression in Bodies in Action, a fine art photographic series featuring professional athletes, Olympians, and dancers from distinguished companies. The series explores the extraordinary mechanics and sculptural beauty of the human body in motion, revealing dimensions of athleticism and artistry that are often concealed by the speed of performance.

A defining characteristic of Bodies in Action is its unusual visual construction. In many photographs, two figures appear to be interacting, competing, or performing together. In reality, both figures are the same individual, photographed in opposition to themselves. This technique allows two perspectives of a single body to coexist within one composition, creating images that are simultaneously dynamic, revealing, and visually unexpected. The result occupies a distinctive space between sports photography, portraiture, and contemporary fine art.

The series has been featured in three New York gallery exhibitions, while Mitchel's broader fine art photography has also been exhibited internationally, including in Europe and Japan.

Beyond Bodies in Action, his portfolio encompasses celebrity portraiture, dance, sports, fitness, lifestyle, and other explorations of the human figure. Across these varied disciplines, a consistent visual sensibility emerges: an interest in the interplay of light and form, an instinct for the decisive moment, and an ability to transform familiar subjects into images of enduring visual interest.

Throughout his career, Mitchel has moved fluidly between commissioned photography and personal artistic exploration. His work brings together the technical precision of an experienced commercial photographer and the creative curiosity of an artist continually seeking new ways to interpret the world through his lens.
